County Executive John Leopold is being congratulated for his fiscal leadership while former Annapolis Mayor Ellen Moyer is being berated for driving the city into fiscal disaster. In fact, Anne Arundel County is following down the same path as the city, and acting even more irresponsibly.

Difficulties dealing with three feet of snow in six days were to be expected as Anne Arundel County was pummeled with two back-to-back massive storms starting February 5th.   However, the county could have done a much better job if it had used existing GPS technology to manage operations.

County Executive John Leopold has been chastising the County Council for not changing zoning regulations around Arundel Mills Mall to allow slots, indicating that the $30 million in potential revenue the county would receive from slot machines would be a new revenue source the county could use to pay for services.

With huge deficits foreseeable for the next several years, we need to stop focusing on short-term measures to balance the budget and figure out how we can deliver the services important to our citizens far more efficiently.

The last several years have been tough ones for Anne Arundel County.  Under County Executive John Leopold, we have been living beyond our means.  In fiscal years 2009 and 2010 combined, the county is projected to spend $150.6 million more than its revenues.
